Meharry Medical College opened its doors on Oct. 13, 1876 as the Meharry Medical Department of Central Tennessee College, later Walden University, with the purpose of producing "intelligent physicians among the Colored people"; named for benefactors, Samuel Meharry and his four brothers, Hugh, Alexander, David, and Jessie Meharry, who together donated $20,000 in 1875; the school became a separate institution in 1915. Charles W. Johnson, Sr. (1922-1999) began his long association with Meharry Medical College in 1947. A native of Ennis, Texas, he received his undergraduate education at Prairie View University. He studied bacteriology and parasitology in a Masters program at the University of Southern California. After working a short time with the Rockefeller Institute, Johnson joined the faculty at Meharry. He earned his medical degree at Meharry in 1953 in addition to his duties teaching microbiology.
