Charles W. Johnson, Sr. (1922-1999) began his long association with Meharry Medical College in 1947. A native of Ennis, Texas, he received his undergraduate education at Prairie View University. He studied bacteriology and parasitology in a Masters program at the University of Southern California. After working a short time with the Rockefeller Institute, Johnson joined the faculty at Meharry. He earned his medical degree at Meharry in 1953 in addition to his duties teaching microbiology.
